Tamper Evident – security labeling against counterfeiting

Whether medicine, food or cosmetics: when we open the packaging of certain products, we want to make sure that we use safe products, that is, we seek, above all, protection against counterfeiting. This is a particularly topical issue today, given the forthcoming deadline for the EU pharmaceutical industry: From February 2019, over-the-counter medicines must be protected against counterfeiting through Tamper Evident secondary packaging labeling. This is one of the safety features required under the Falsified Medicines Directive 2011/62 / EU, initiated by the European Parliament.

In order for pharmacists, healthcare professionals and consumers to recognize whether a product has been opened without authorization, the packaging must be visibly and irreversibly damaged when first opened. Here is the place of safety labels (more precisely tamper evident or seal labels), which in the case of an attempt at their removal, visibly destroy the integrity of the secondary packaging
Although other methods, such as cellophane packaging, specific adhesive or special procedures for folding packaging boxes can be used for protection, labeling is a great choice. Labeling machines can be easily integrated into the existing production environment. In this way, increased costs for new packaging and restructuring of the packaging line can be avoided.

The relevant Directive regarding food and cosmetics packaging is also expected to be enforced in the coming years.
